Eight new documents of Friar Juan de Zumárraga, stored in the records of the Sevillian notary Juan Ruiz de Porras, are published in this article. Prior to his return to New Spain in 1534, the bishop had resolved various family problems —in the first place, the issue of the inheritance of his nephew Juan López de Zumárraga; he entrusted his affairs, economic and legal, to people of confidence, the majority of Basque origin (Hortuño de Avendaño, Jácome de Mallea, Sancho López de Otálora), and last he provided service to the ducal house of Béjar and, in passing, to Hernán Cortés.
