Abstract

The purpose of this article is to publish the 1676 narrative of father Juan de Paiva concerning the mythological origins of the Apalachee ball game and its ceremonial practices The manuscript, housed at the Archivo General de Indias, has never been edited in Spanish, despite being one of the two extant sources that shed light on the language and culture of the Apalachee Indians within the Spanish mission system of 17th-century Florida A correct interpretation of the text, I contend, allows for a more accurate reading of the symbolism behind the ceremonies and mythic origins of the game.
