In the second half of the 19th century Spanish residents in Peru managed to get wealthy and integrated in the economic power circles. They were traders and owners seeking profit through speculation in guano fertilizer, saltpeter and finance. They were affected by internal instability and the war with Chile, so that their expectations were not met and they made claims individually and collectively before Peruvian and Chilean authorities. As a last resort they used mediation by the Spanish government through its diplomatic representation in Lima. The article recovers especially significant cases of this claiming process.
