Abstract

This is evident in his deeds as president and also in his writings, and hence he is a significant example of the predominant mentality of some of the Latin-American intellectual circles in the years between 1820 and 1845. The prevail-ing circumstances in Ecuador at that time forced Rocafuerte to adapt his more radical theoretical positions, although without totally renouncing his liberal and imperial vision that will become the precedent to the confrontation between the Church and the State in the second half of the 19th Century.
