The article “The Improbable Life of Juana Escobar. Slavery, Intimacy and Freedom in Ponce, Puerto Rico, 1815-1830” by José Luis Belmonte Postigo, published in Anuario de Estudios Americanos, Vol. 80, No. 2, 2023, has been awarded an Honorable Mention Blanca G. Silvestrini Prize 2024, given by LASA (Latin American Studies Association), Puerto Rico Section, for the best research articles on Puerto Rico in the past year. Based on the life trajectory of Juana Escobar, who went from enslaved woman to businesswoman and captive owner, the article offers an attentive analysis of human situations during the so-called “Second Slavery” in the Atlantic world from a gender perspective.
