Resumen

Las danzas nativas de las islas del Pacífico, como las CHamoru, en las islas Marianas, fascinaron a los europeos desde el primer contacto en el siglo XVI. En sus descripciones se percibe el abanico de emociones que transmitían, relacionadas con su papel clave y diverso en las sociedades oceánicas, desde el ámbito religioso al militar. A partir de relatos e imágenes de los visitantes, en este artículo expondremos cómo estas «historias en movimiento» fueron primeramente observadas e interpretadas por los europeos y (re)codificadas e integradas en la naciente sociedad colonial, sirviendo actualmente como recurso turístico y reivindicación nacionalista.
